Topological Maps for Visual Navigation

چکیده
We address the problem of visual-based indoors navigation based on a single camera that provides the required visual feedback information. The usual approach relies on a map to relocate the robot with respect to the environment. Once the robot position and orientation are known, a suitable trajectory is deened according to the mission goals and the structure of the environment. However, one could argue that it should be possible to perform most missions without a precise knowledge of the robot position and orientation. This is indeed the case for many living beings when they navigate in complex environments. We propose to represent the environment as a topological map that is tightly related to the system perceptual and motion capabilities. The map should contain environmental information that can easily be extracted by the system and the mission should be described in terms of a set of available behaviors or primitive actions. We present results that merge visual servoing and appearance based methods. Servoing is used locally when a continuous stream of visual information is available. Appearance based methods offer a means of providing a topological description of the environment, without using odometry information or any absolute localization method. Preliminary tests are presented and discussed.

Vision-based navigation and environmental representations with an omnidirectional camera
This paper proposes a method for the visual-based navigation of a mobile robot in indoor environments, using a single omni-directional (catadioptric) camera. The geometry of the catadioptric sensor and the method used to obtain a bird’s eye (orthographic) view of the ground plane are presented. This representation significantly simplifies the solution to navigation problems, by eliminating any ...

We introduce a hybrid algorithm for the self-semantic location and autonomous navigation of robots using entropy-based vision and visual topological maps. In visual topological maps the visual landmarks are considered as leave points for guiding the robot to reach a target point (robot homing) in indoor environments. These visual landmarks are defined from images of relevant objects or characte...
متن کاملDynamic Insets for Context-Aware Graph Navigation
Maintaining both overview and detail while navigating in graphs, such as road networks, airline route maps, or social networks, is difficult, especially when targets of interest are located far apart. We present a navigation technique called Dynamic Insets that provides context awareness for graph navigation. Dynamic insets utilize the topological structure of the network to draw a visual inset...

We address the problem of building topological maps in visual space for robot navigation. The nodes of our topological maps consist of clusters in manifold space, and we propose an unsupervised learning algorithm that automatically constructs these manifolds the user need only specify the desired number of clusters and the minimum number of images per cluster. متن کاملExtracting Topological Information from Grid Maps for Robot Navigation
In many robotic navigation-related tasks, abstracting the environment where mobile robots carry out some mission can be of a great benefit. In particular, extracting a simple topological graph-like representation from a more complex and detailed metric map is often required for path-planning and navigation. In this work, an approach to perform such extraction in grid maps is presented. The focu...
متن کاملOmni-directional Visual Navigation
This paper considers a method for the visual-based navigation of a mobile robot in an indoor environment. The sole sensor used is an omni-directional camera. Navigation is achieved by combining appearance based methods and visual servoing. A database of omni-directional images is obtained during a training stage. This database maps the environment in a topological sense. Since the image set is ...
